2022 Call for Submissions

SUMA is inviting proposals for education and breakout sessions at our 2022 Convention. We are looking for topics that are current and focused on key aspects of urban government that will be beneficial to elected officials and municipal administrators.

Being a presenter is an outstanding way to share your knowledge and expertise leading to professional visbility, recognition, credibility, and influence in the future of Saskatchewan's urban municpialities.

Who attends?

Approximately 1,000 delegates attend the convention, including elected officials, city managers, and chief administration officers from cities, towns, villages, resort villages, and northern municipalities throughout Saskatchewan. Our annual convention is an event where municipal decision makers come to network, share leading practies, and find collaborative partners to support their communities moving foward. Convention 2022 will mark SUMA's return to an in-person convention, providing exciting new opportunities for communities and presenters.

Why present?

  • Great exposure for you and your oganization as professional leaders
  • Help elevate the knowledge base of Saskatchewan's municipal leaders
  • Excellent networking opportunity
  • Build relationships with SUMA, the voice of Saskatchewan's hometowns

Session Format

SUMA is looking for innovative and engaging presentations that will captivate the audience. Each session is a total of 75 minutes including time for questions and discussions. The following are the two types of sessions offered at convention.

  • Education Sessions – Delegates choose which sessions they would like to attend.
  • Breakout Sessions – Delegates are divided into three groups:
    • Cities
    • Towns and Villages
    • Northern Municipalities

We encourage highly interactive methods to facilitate learning, build delegates’ confidence, and enhance the transfer of learning in their municipalities. In your submission, please discuss how your presentation will stand out from others.

Session Objectives

The theme for the 2022 SUMA Convention is Connect. Whether it be with peers, exhibitors, provincial officials, or SUMA staff, having an in-person convention again will allow our members to connect in a way that they have been unable to for the past two years. Your presentation should focus on re-establishing and building on those connections.

We are looking for creative, out-of-the-box thinkers to come foward and share their knowledge. We are open to suggestions for topics; however, we have identified the following topics as main concerns for urban municipal governments:

  • Embracing Local Tourism
  • Tackling Emerging Environmental Issues
  • Managing Community Policing
  • Council Governance and Efficiency
  • Reconciliation
  • Innovative Municipal Technologies for Economic Growth
  • Cyber Security
  • Community Wellness and Mental Health

Other Information

We will provide a complimentary one-day registration for the day of the presentation. As a not-for-profit association, SUMA does not typically provide honoraria for session presenters but is willing to consider all submissions that are accepted.

Selections will be made by the Convention Planning Committee based on a number of criteria, including topics and benefits to delegates.
