Municipal Eco-Action Centre
Empowering Saskatchewan Municipalities for a Greener Tomorrow
Who We Are
Saskatchewan’s municipalities are on the front lines of environmental challenges, facing growing issues such as extreme weather events, aging infrastructure, and the escalating need for sustainable practices.
While they manage over half of the province’s public infrastructure and are well-positioned to lead in climate action, many, especially smaller communities, struggle with limited staff capacity, funding, and access to technical expertise.
The Municipal Eco-Action Centre (MEAC) is a made-in-Saskatchewan solution designed to close this gap. MEAC is a proposed, centralized hub that would provide support to municipalities as they plan, fund, and implement climate and environmental initiatives. Built to empower communities of all sizes, MEAC ensures equitable support especially for those serving vulnerable populations.
Additionally, MEAC will provide funding, technical assistance, and education to municipalities to help them lower energy costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve climate resilience.
MEAC also supports the adoption of clean technologies, including electric vehicle infrastructure, solar energy systems, and other innovative solutions to help communities transition to a low-carbon future.
Through MEAC, Saskatchewan municipalities will benefit from:
- Streamlined access to climate-related funding and support
- Customized technical assistance and training
- Collaborative partnerships across municipalities, the province, and key stakeholders
- Enhanced capacity to meet both local and national environmental goals
Mission Statement
To support Saskatchewan municipalities in building resilient, sustainable communities through access to funding, resources, and expertise. MEAC promotes energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, green infrastructure, and climate adaptation to reduce emissions and drive economic growth. As such, MEAC will assist the province in strengthening municipal capacity, foster innovation, and ensure a cleaner, more sustainable future for all Saskatchewan residents, including seniors, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable populations.
What MEAC Could OfferWhile MEAC is still in its early stages, we are laying the foundation to deliver programs and services that will help municipalities across Saskatchewan lead the way in local climate action. Here's what you can expect as we continue to grow:
Practical guidance and access to funding opportunities to help municipalities implement clean energy projects, green infrastructure, and climate resilience initiatives.
A centralized space offering workshops, learning resources, and peer networks designed to strengthen local capacity and build climate leadership across communities. A platform for municipalities to share success stories, challenges, and innovative approaches fostering peer-to-peer learning and collective progress.
Opportunities to participate in early-stage demonstrations and initiatives that allow communities to test, evaluate, and scale sustainable solutions.
Resources and funding navigation for upgrading municipal buildings, improving operational efficiency, and lowering emissions.
Support for municipalities interested in adopting clean technologies such as solar, wind, and other renewable energy systems.
Guidance on incorporating nature-based solutions and climate-smart planning to build more resilient and livable communities.
Workshops, toolkits, and expert-led sessions to empower elected officials and municipal staff with the knowledge and confidence to act on climate goals.
Connecting municipalities with industry leaders, and other communities to co-create forward-thinking solutions for a sustainable Saskatchewan. |
