Town of Rockglen Seeks Public Works and Utilities Foreman
Key Responsibilities
Public Works
- Supervise and direct employees on daily operations and task assignments.
- Oversee work related to roads, signage, snow removal, sidewalks, town property, cemetery grounds, campgrounds.
- Schedule and supervise maintenance of town vehicles, equipment, and attachments.
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment as required.
- Coordinate asphalt and pothole repairs, graveling, traffic control, and culvert maintenance.
- Install and maintain signage, barricades, decorations, and flags.
- Supervise repairs and upkeep of sidewalks, boulevards, and the town trailer park.
- Conduct visual inspections of town buildings for health and safety issues.
- Maintain inventory of tools, stock, and equipment.
- Oversee shop and yard maintenance and cleanliness.
- Supervise, guide, and train less experienced staff.
- Plan, supervise and coordinate the daily work i.e. mowing, spraying, water testing, garbage collection, snow removal, etc.
- And other things as directed by council.
Utilities
- Direct water and sewer installation, repair, and maintenance, including mains and service lines.
- Oversee maintenance of sewer pumping stations, lagoons, and water treatment plant components, reservoirs.
- Conduct valve and hydrant operations, repairs, replacements, and testing.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Waste Management
- Coordinate residential and commercial waste collection.
- Supervise landfill operations including compaction, covering, pest control, and cell construction.
- Ensure compliance with waste disposal permits and environmental standards.
Qualifications & Experience
- Proven ability to lead crews and manage outdoor construction and maintenance work.
- Strong organizational skills with flexibility to adapt to changing work needs.
- Ability to interpret and follow written, verbal, and diagrammatic instructions.
- Effective record-keeping and reporting skills.
- Commitment to workplace safety for self, team members, and the public.
- Proficient in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g., backhoe, tractors).
- Valid class 5 driver’s license (air brake endorsement preferred or willing to obtain within one year).
- Minimum standard of Grade 12 or equivalent is required
- Powered Mobile Equipment Certification, WHIMIS, Confined Spaces, Ground Disturbance (or ability to obtain).
- Experience in municipal operations, infrastructure maintenance, or a related field is considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge and experience in construction, equipment, or maintenance of equipment.
- Water and wastewater distribution system knowledge
- Preferred Candidate will hold a Valid Class 2 Water and Wastewater Treatment & Collection Training.
- Self motivated, have good time management skills and good communication skills.
Work Conditions
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, wind).
- Exposure to dust, noise, physical labor, confined spaces, and heights.
- Operation in sewer and water environments.
- On-call availability may be required for emergencies (e.g., snow removal, water line breaks).
- Lifting of heavy objects and walk or stand for periods of time.
