Using social housing as affordable housing units

Resolution
Whereas many small rural communities have participated in a Social Housing Program for many years; and Whereas there exists a need for affordable housing in all these communities; Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA lobby the Government of Saskatchewan to amend the legislation and their social housing policy to permit small urban communities the option of utilizing social housing units as affordable housing units.
Provincial Response
The Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation recognizes that social housing may be the only rental solution in some smaller communities. A review of the Affordable Housing Program is currently underway and we acknowledge that further consideration needs to be given to the impact of social housing policy changes on tenants and Housing Authorities. The ministry will communities with municipalities in the future as they work through the details of the program changes.
