Program to Encourage Construction of Affordable Accommodations

Year: 2009

Resolution

Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA urge the Government of Saskatchewan to develop a program that would provide incentives to the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation or private developers for the purpose of the construction of new affordable rental units.

Provincial Response

Response: The unprecedented economic development and population growth our province is experiencing has certainly increased housing demand. In its report, the Task Force on Housing Affordability identified inadequate supply as a major factor fueling increasing rental costs and limiting further development. The Task Force also identified a number of barriers that will need to be addressed and also made some recommendations that our government is working to implement in the near future. As a result, the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation will be working to improve coordination with municipalities to meet long-term housing needs specific to communities throughout the province. An amendment to The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Act is pending. The amendment will establish a new, more responsive board of directors for The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Once a new board is in place, it will be in a position to address many of the recommendations of the Task Force.
