Funding for Decommissioning of Unused Water Wells

Year: 2009

Resolution

Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA urge the provincial and/or federal governments to fund 100 per cent the decommissioning of unused water wells, including well head protection, for existing wells.

Provincial Response

Response: The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority continues to work on cost effective methods for decommissioning wells and to develop and provide educational material on well decommissioning. In 2008 a video on decommissioning large diameter bore wells was released and a companion vides on decommissioning drilled wells will be completed in the spring of 2009. In addition, a publication titled A Landowners Guide to Water Well Management, which covers all aspects of operating domestic wells, was also recently released and is available on the web. The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes that there is interest in increased funding for well decommissioning. However, at this time there is no additional funding available for this purpose.
