Increase Training Seats for Nursing
Year: 2007
Resolution
Therefore be it resolved that SUMA demand that the Government of Saskatchewan increase funding to increase the number of training seats for registered nurses in Saskatchewan.
Provincial Response
Response: The Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan (RN education) received support for an increase of 50 seats, including 40 seats in the traditional four-year program and 10 seats in the Second Degree Entry Program. This will bring the total number of training seats to 450 to be fully phased in by September 2008. This increase was based on consultation with the Program and the department of Advanced Education and Employment. Increases to education seats are based on the time required to hire additional faculty and to secure the infrastructure needed to deliver the program for the extra students. In addition, government recently announced the re-establishment of a 16 seat diploma psychiatric nursing program in Saskatchewan.
