The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) and the SUMA (SUMA) have entered a partnership to collect information on Saskatchewan practices for regional collaboration on recreation services and to develop a guide to help local governments establish regional partnerships. We have contracted independent firm HJ Linnen Associates to conduct the research.
This research project has three key objectives:
- Gather province-wide information outlining the needs and current practices around collaborating to operate and program community recreation services and facilities.
- Develop a resource to guide communities’ collaboration discussions with other local governments.
- Establish a comprehensive communications strategy to support the use and distribution of the research findings and implementation of the resources.
This research project was inspired in part by the response to sessions at the annual SPRA and SUMA conferences.
Saskatchewan is growing; communities are actively searching for new and innovative ways to meet the recreation needs of an increasingly diverse and growing population. A number of local governments have been investigating and, in many cases implementing, strategies that increase the level of collaboration and support for joint facility and program operations.
We anticipate more local governments in Saskatchewan will investigate the possibility of increased collaboration as an option to meet the increasing demands for recreation.
This research will help local governments get ready for the discussion. Many are already looking for this information. Project outcomes will provide guidance so local governments can respond to opportunities for regional collaboration in recreation service provision.
