$1 Million for Recycling in 2013-2014

Apr 16, 2013
The provincial government has extended funding for the Municipal Recycling Bridge Funding Program for paper and cardboard into the 2013-14 year. The new year will begin on May 1, 2013.
“SUMA is proud to again partner with the government to continue this essential program. Along with our members, we appreciate the province’s continued commitment to helping urban governments sustain their recycling infrastructure programs in this critical time before the implementation of the multi-material recycling program,” said Mayor Debra Button, SUMA President.
More than 120 participating municipalities have benefitted from the Municipal Recycling Bridge Funding Program since its 2009 implementation. The program is a partnership between the provincial government and SUMA. The Ministry of Environment provides the funding and SUMA manages the administration and operation of the program. This partnership has successfully sustained many municipal recycling operations that may otherwise have been forced to close due to low salvage prices and a volatile recycling market.
Recycling is an important initiative for urban governments. SUMA hopes to see the MMRP fully implemented by 2014 to provide a sustainable source of funding, allowing municipalities to continue to pursue recycling initiatives.
Current bridge funding participants will receive more information on the 2013-14 bridge funding program in May 2013.
