Support for Maintenance of Museum Facilities
Year: 2010
Resolution
Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA lobby the Government of Saskatchewan to assist local municipalities in funding the maintenance of municipally owned museum buildings.
Provincial Response
Response: Museums help preserve Saskatchewan’s heritage and tell the story of our history to Saskatchewan residents and visitors alike. In addition to directly funding a number of large, provincial-scale museums, the Government of Saskatchewan currently provides funding to small and mid-sized museums in Saskatchewan through the following programs: 1.SaskCulture’s Museum Grant Program, Supported by the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust fund, this grant provides operational support to museums. 2.Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation Grant Programs. Funds capital support for designated heritage properties through matching grants. Of the over 250 museums in Saskatchewan, 99 hold municipal or provincial heritage property designation under The Heritage Property Act, and approximately one-half are municipally owned. Through the development and implementation of a new cultural policy for the province of Saskatchewan, my ministry is working with the cultural sector to identify opportunities and actions to address infrastructure and funding challenges. The stewardship of cultural resources, which includes the maintenance and management of museum collections and facilities, was identified as a strategic direction in the draft cultural policy framework.
