Improved High Speed Internet Access in Northern Saskatchewan

Resolution

Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA lobby Saskatchewan Telecommunications to address the need for proper high speed Internet access in all northern communities.

Provincial Response

Response: Also as part of the Rural Infrastructure Program, Sask Tel is using a mix of fibre (DSL), fixed wireless and satellite technologies to provide 100% broadband Internet accessibility throughout the province of Saskatchewan. On June 9, 2009, SaskTel launched SaskTel Satellite High Speed powered Xplornet to all areas of the province not currently served by SaskTel High Speed Internet with the exception of 15 communities. On November, 18 , 2009, SaskTel announced that RFNow and YorkLink will install and maintain the required facilities and equipment to complete a fixed wireless system to make residential broadband internet access service available to 15 communities who do not currently have access to high speed internet through SaskTel. RFNow will provide serive to Elfros, Gladmar, Lake Alma, Mistatim, Pennant, Pilger, Prairie River, Riverhurst, Sceptre, St. Benedict, Wood Mountain and Yellow Creek.
