Additional Funding for Northern Communities to Comply with Environmental Standards

Year: 2010

Resolution

Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA lobby Saskatchewan Environment for funds to assist Northern communities in complying with these regulations as well as any other environmental regulations passed down in the near future.

Provincial Response

Response: The Ministry of Environment recognizes that compliance with environmental standards presents challenges for northern municipalities. Municipalities should also recognize that planning to develop and sustain municipal infrastructure will position them to attract development and protect human health and the environment. The ministry is working with northern municipalities on a phased-in approach to improve the management of landfills, as has been done for drinking water and wastewater management. The ministry does not provide funding to address “ordinary course-of-business” activities such as landfill upgrades. However, northern communities are encouraged to seek funding under various federal-provincial infrastructure funds available from time to time.
