Upgrade Highway Network in Northern Saskatchewan
Year: 2010
Resolution
Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA lobby the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure to address the need for upgrading highway corridors in many northern communities.
Provincial Response
Response: The Minister of highways and Infrastructure recognizes the importance of northern roads. The Ministry is in the process of refining a new Northern Transportation Strategy (NTS) that is consistent with the government’s growth, security, and promises/prosperity goals to address the needs of northern Saskatchewan. The strategy is similar to the Rural Highway Strategy in that it prioritizes projects based on clear and transparent factors. A Northern Transportation Advisory Committee has been formed to provide input on the development of an open and transparent priority framework. Representatives from New North, the area transportation planning committees, First Nations, Metis, and industry are part of the advisory committee. In 2010 the Ministry will be undertaking work on Highway 155 north of Beauval and Continuing work on the Wollaston Lake road that was started last year.
