Zero Emissions Clean Coal Power Generating Facility

Year: 2008

Resolution

Therefore be it resolved that SUMA lobby the Provincial Government to advocate for and partner with SaskPower, the Government of Canada, the oil industry and any other party to make the world’s first near zero emissions Clean Coal Power Generating Facility a reality.

Provincial Response

Response: On behalf of SaskPower I would like to thank you for your support of the goal to make a Saskatchewan clean coal facility a reality. SaskPower shares your perspective that a clean coal demonstration project is an important step in assessing how nations may meet electrical energy needs while reducing greenhouse gases. As a point of clarification, SaskPower is currently developing the technology to build and operate a near-zero emission Clean Coal power generation facility; the technology has not been developed as noted in your resolution. There are some positive factors that will make this project a reality: • engineering work done to date by SaskPower, • $240 M in federal support for a Boundary Dam Unit 3 Clean Coal demonstration project, and • high level of interest expressed by nearby oil field operators who are already familiar with the value that can come from enhanced oil recovery.
