Right to Determine Level of Fire Protection

Year: 2007

Resolution

Therefore be it resolved that the SUMA lobby the Minister of Corrections and Public Safety and the Minister of Labour to maintain a municipality’s right to determine the level of fire protection in their municipality.

Provincial Response

Response: A review of The Fire Prevention Act, 1992 (the Act) by a ministerial advisory committee suggests that a number of changes to that Act be implemented to better support minimum levels of fire prevention. These proposed amendments will be moving forward through the legislative session in the fall of 2007. Proposed changes will be forwarded to your organization for review. The government recognizes the importance of personal safety for fire fighters and I understand a review of The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 pertaining to fire fighter safety is being undertaken. Department officials and representatives of the Fire Commissioner will be meeting with representatives of the Department of Labour to discuss the implications of the proposed changes, particularly for municipalities with a small population base.
