The last week has brought two pieces of news showing success in SUMA's advocacy efforts.
On the provincial level, last week the government announced that Saskatchewan will have a provincial athletics commission operating here by next summer. SUMA lobbied the government to establish this commission beginning in 2010, knowing that changes to the Criminal Code were coming and would make professional boxing and mixed martial arts contests legal in Canada.
Then today, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Saskatchewan had its final report tabled today. As we told you several months ago, the new federal electoral map will have five urban-only ridings (two in Regina, and three in Saskatoon). Of the other seven districts, six would "contain at least one small- to medium-sized urban centre." In April 2012, SUMA asked the commission to create strictly urban ridings in Saskatchewan's two largest cities.
We are pleased to know that SUMA's voice has been heard at the federal and provincial level, and continue to work as the voice of urban municipal governments in Saskatchewan.
