Funding for Flood Mitigation Projects through NDMP

Jun 22, 2016

Overland flooding is one of the most frequent and costly types of disaster in Canada, and the effects can be devastating for communities. The National Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP) was created in 2015 to help Canadians in high-risk communities reduce the anguish and high costs associated with major flood-related events.

Through the NDMP, the Government of Canada will cost-share flood mitigation project costs: up to 50 per cent for eligible provincial projects and up to 75 per cent for eligible projects in the territories.

To receive funding, community officials should submit a proposal to their provincial or territorial contacts. The province or territory will then need to submit eligible proposals to Public Safety Canada by June 30, 2016 for projects to be eligible for this round of funding.

Various types of flood mitigation projects are eligible for funding under the NDMP, including:

  • risk assessments;
  • flood mapping;
  • mitigation planning; and
  • investments in non-structural and small-scale structural mitigation projects.
