Saskatchewan’s urban municipalities are pleased with Minister Harrison’s announcement today of proposed legislation to implement four year terms for urban councils.
Speaking shortly after Minister Harrison’s announcement, SUMA President Allan Earle said, “This is a good move on the government’s part. When you’re a newly elected councillor, the transition can be quite difficult. By the time you get a real understanding of the job, it’s time for re-election. Four year terms will help alleviate that challenge.”
In 2008, SUMA members passed a resolution supporting the move to a four year election cycle. The Government of Saskatchewan’s announcement today is further evidence of the strong government to government relationship between the municipal sector and the province. SUMA looks forward to working with the government on this initiative.
